The candidate will be involved in practical work in the laboratory, perform data analysis and computer simulations, and participate in model development.

Scholarship Description: Within the infrastructure project JERICO (Joint European Research Infrastructure network for Coastal Observatories) funding by the EU is provided for the development and cooperation of European coastal observing systems. The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht develops and operates an own coastal observing system COSYNA (Coastal Observation System for Northern and Arctic Seas) with different in-situ measuring systems (piles, FerryBoxes and Gliders). In the project JERICO Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht took over the task to harmonize the operational service of different observation systems to integrate novel sensor developments and to provide a common basis. One major component are the so-called FerryBox-systems. These systems allow to measure automatically physical and biological-chemical parameters aboard „Ships of Opportunity“. Besides the activities within the project the main focus will be to ensure the operational status of the FerryBox-systems as well as the scientific analysis and assessment of FerryBox-data with statistical methods including cooperation with mathematical modelling groups.
